Creatures Of Habit
A film featuring Eurico Romaguera
By João Serpa.
Eurico's natural charm and style are unmistakable to all who meet him, embodying flare even before he steps foot on a board. Join us on a journey to his hometown in Figueira Da Foz, where Eurico finds a true reflection of his style and makes every moment a cherished reminder of life's simple pleasures. In the company of the world's longest right-handed wave, we uncover his fresh take on alternative surfing, intertwined with daily habits that resonate with us all.
My vision is that surfing is not about fun or escaping from your problems. It’s about expressing yourself on the wave. I guess it comes from a need. The need to express yourself artistically. Surf is art, it teaches us to embrace risk, to embrace failure, and to find beauty in the chaos of the world around us. It's really about diving headfirst into the unknown and seeing what happens.
My name is Eurico Romaguero. But people call me Kiko. I was born in Coimbra, a small historical city in the center of Portugal, very famous for its university life. But I’ve been living by the sea, in Figueira da Foz, for the past 10 years or so. Living in a small city has it;s perks. I think there is something quite unique about knowing all of your neighbors' names. Walking into a restaurant where they already know what you’re going to order, how you like your eggs, how you drink your coffee. We’re all creatures of habits, Portugal is a great place for people that enjoy the coziness and intimacy of sharing with others those same habits and routines.
Figueira is my home. We have amazing seafood, delicious wine, the longest righthander in Europe and world class waves. I got everything I need here. I’ve traveled a lot, constantly adjusting my perception of myself, peeling layers as I discovered the several worlds that inhabit planet Earth. But I guess that no matter how much I travel, how many boards I try, how many waves I ride, nothing quite compares to the feeling of surfing at home. Here, I can say I am my most authentic self, and this is where my surfing is a true reflection of my personality and artistic expression. I guess that, to me, home is both the starting point and the ultimate destination in my surfing journey.
We are all results of our own background and surroundings, we are shaped by the books we read, the music we hear… Personally… I have to say I am the product of my grandfather’s legacy, ,my uncle's influence, and my father’s teachings. Our lives are interconnected, bound by a shared sense of restlessness, and a deep desire to break conventions. My grandfather was part of the Portuguese revolution of 1974. He remained true to his beliefs and identity during a dictatorship, and his determined spirit continues to inspire me to this day. My uncle founded a legendary punk-rock band, the Tedio Boys, that changed the Portuguese music scene in the late ‘80s. And my father, a surfing pioneer in Portugal and the founder of the surf event Gliding Barnacles, he taught me how to surf before I could even talk. These are my roots, my culture, and my inspiration. Like them, I strive to do the unexpected, to break conventions, and I guess push the boundaries of what’s possible.
Gliding Barnacles is a surf event, and it’s actually a community gathering, I’d say, that celebrates surfing as a form of art and culture. We welcome people from all around the world every year in Figueira da Foz. My father started it ten years ago with friends and I started helping with the organization a couple years later. We’re trying to shift mindsets here. It’s hectic, it’s chaos, it's a lot of hard work, but we all have a hell of a time.
Never surfing again or never listening to music again? That one is easy. There’s no doubt. It might be a bit controversial, but… I choose music over surfing anyday, without even thinking twice. I mean, It makes sense to me. Music is my main source of inspiration. I can surf a thousand different waves in one single musical key. I'm not a musician, but… I would like for people to think of me as an artist. At the end of the day, that is my goal. Art is my goal. Surfing is just the a… Surfing is… just the medium.
