Daily MOVEMENT with
Bethaney Valverde & Adlai Wakeman

We caught up with Californian locals and water women, Beth and Adlai on our recent ActiveSwim campaign shot over on their home stretch in Southern California. The day unravelled with dreamy blue skies and consistent waves, captured through the nostalgic lens of our dear friend Lauryn Alvarez. It's hard not to feel thrown back to 70's beach days via the golden glow formed by Cali's afternoon glow, a time much simpler and mused by most. Though after chatting with the girls, it became quite clear that life's pleasures are simple - and they can be found in the art of every day routine.

Our Australian office is counting down the days to get back over to the states, specifically back to California where half of our team is. Tell us, which part of California do you both call home?

Beth: Adlai and I are roomates and we live in Encinitas, a little beach town in San Diego.

Adlai: The part of Cali that I call home is North County San Diego. I live in Encinitas and grew up here with the most beautiful beaches that are very dear to my heart.

 

If you had to rattle off your favourite parts about California, what would they be?

Beth: Oooo so many things. Good waves is pretty high up on the list. Warm weather too. Lots of inspiring people to connect with and cool places to see.

Adlai: My favourite part of California is the coastline. I love catching a golden and pink sunrise on a weekday morning when no one is out and you can smell the saltwater in the air. I love that people are unique and dress and create according to there individual style. I also love that for the most part there is a general theme of kindness and open minded approach to life. I teach a very niche and ancient style of yoga that takes a certain amount of bravery to approach.  

Much like living on the Southern end of the Gold Coast, I imagine the beautiful surrounds of Cali make it easy to stay motivated. How important is daily movement to both of you?

Beth: Daily movement is everything for me. Physical and mental tie hand in hand so if I'm moving, then I'm happy. It's how I best express myself so if I ever feel stuck or off I know I just need to move. Honestly I have so much energy sometimes I feel like I need to learn how to sit still and move less haha.

Adlai: Daily movement is one of the main staples of my life. Whether it’s a morning walk, surf, yoga or hike I believe that movement is one of the most profound mechanisms of moving trauma through the body developing self awareness / compassion for others.  

 

We are big advocates of making the most of our time in the mornings here. Tell us, how do you like to start the day over there?

Beth: I love long mornings so when the suns up I'm up. It feels good to be out in the world before the hustle and bustle. I feel like it always puts me in a good headspace for the rest of the day so that's really important for me. I'll check the waves and if it's looking fun I'll go for a surf. And if it's not I'll get a coffee and go for a stroll and hope the waves get better haha

Adlai: I start my morning with a coffee at my favorite spot called zumbar, and then a morning beach walk, yoga or surf.
